Myths & Facts About Botox® You Should Consider

Nearly 8 million BOTOX® treatments were administered last year in the United States — about 10 times the number administered just 20 years ago. In fact, last year, Botox was the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedure among both women and men, with about three times as many treatments as soft fillers, the second most popular treatment.

Botox is popular for several reasons, including its ease of use, availability, low risk profile, and, of course, its effects. But like any really popular product, there are a lot of misconceptions and rumors about Botox treatments. And, if you’re considering treatment, you might be a bit confused. Here are some of the most common myths and facts to help set the record straight.

Myth: Botox “freezes” your face

This is one of the most common misconceptions about Botox treatment — the belief that injections will make it impossible to have natural-looking expressions, or worse, prevent you from having any expressions. Actually, as an injectable, Botox is very customizable, which means our team can determine the precise amount you need to get the smooth, youthful results you want without causing unwanted side effects.

Unwanted effects occur when you use an unskilled injector who uses the wrong amount of Botox or injects it into the wrong area. At Cornerstone MD in Dallas, we rely on advanced injection methods and accurate dosing for optimal results based on each patient’s unique goals. Precise dosing and injection location allow you to smile, frown, and make a full range of expressions while still smoothing out lines and wrinkles.

Myth: Botox injections are really painful

It’s true, Botox is administered using a needle. But the needles used during administration are very, very fine — much finer than those used for vaccinations. You might have some discomfort around the injection site for a little while after your injections, but it’s only temporary and resolves very soon afterward. If you like, you can gently apply ice to the area to reduce any minor discomfort or swelling. If you’re very sensitive to needles, we also can apply a topical numbing cream before your injections to make your treatment more comfortable.

Myth: Botox can be used on all your facial wrinkles

Botox is super-effective on wrinkles around your eyes, brows, and forehead, and it can be used for some other wrinkles, too, like tiny “smoker’s lines” around your lips. These are dynamic wrinkles — lines and wrinkles caused by repeated facial movements. For wrinkles caused by gravity, sun damage, or genetics, dermal fillers are a better option. Bonus: Botox and fillers can be used together to treat both types of wrinkles for a “mini-facelift” effect.

Myth Final results are immediate

Botox goes to work right away once it’s injected, but it does take a couple of weeks until you’ll see your final results. Until then, you’ll continue to see improvements — and you can expect those improvements to remain for several months. Touchup treatments can help you maintain your results indefinitely.

Myth: Botox is only for people 40 and older

Plenty of people think Botox is only useful for people who already have lines and wrinkles — and for sure, it can work well in reducing or eliminating small lines and wrinkles that make you look older and worn out. But Botox can also be used to help prevent some types of wrinkles, including crow’s feet, which are often the first wrinkles to show up.

So-called preventive treatments have been shown to help keep wrinkles around the eyes, forehead, and mouth from appearing, so you can enjoy your youthful look for years to come. The key is to begin receiving Botox treatments early, when those lines are still very, very fine — before they’ve had a chance to settle into actual wrinkles. Today, plenty of people are having Botox in their early 30s and even in their mid- to late 20s.
