Abnormal Bleeding Q & A

What is abnormal bleeding?

Abnormal bleeding refers to any vaginal bleeding that falls outside what would be considered normal. For most women, a normal menstrual cycle ranges from 24-38 days with as many as eight days of bleeding.

You may be experiencing abnormal bleeding if:

  • Your cycle is shorter than 24 days or longer than 38 days
  • Your menstrual bleeding is so heavy it interrupts your daily activities
  • You bleed in between your period
  • You bleed after intercourse
  • Your period lasts longer than eight days

If you’re experiencing any of these abnormalities, Dr. Riley can perform a comprehensive evaluation to find out what may be behind your abnormal bleeding.

What causes abnormal bleeding?

Numerous gynecological conditions may lead to abnormal bleeding. Some of the most common include:

  • Uterine fibroids
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Endometriosis
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
  • Gynecological cancer
  • Choice of birth control
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Miscarriage

In some cases, the cause of your abnormal bleeding may be unknown.

How is abnormal bleeding diagnosed?

Dr. Riley provides a comprehensive examination to determine what may be causing your abnormal bleeding. During your evaluation, she reviews your symptoms and medical history and performs both a physical and pelvic exam.

To confirm or rule out a diagnosis, Dr. Riley may perform additional testing, such as:

  • Ultrasound
  • Blood work
  • Urinalysis
  • Testing for STDs

She may also recommend a laparoscopy, which is a minimally invasive procedure that allows her to take a closer look at your reproductive organs with a laparoscope. The laparoscope is a surgical camera that gets inserted through a tiny incision in your abdomen. During your laparoscopy, Dr. Riley may be able to correct the underlying cause of your abnormal bleeding.

What are the treatments for abnormal bleeding?

Dr. Riley takes a personal approach to care and tailors her treatment plans to meet your very specific needs. Treatment for your abnormal bleeding may vary depending on the underlying cause. Initially, she may take a conservative approach and prescribe hormonal birth control to help regulate ovulation and your bleeding.

If conservative measures fail to improve your symptoms, surgical procedures may be recommended, depending on the underlying cause of your abnormal bleeding.

Changes in your menstrual bleeding should be evaluated. For expert care of all your health needs, call CornerstoneMD or book an appointment online today.
